Instead of buying all licensed Frozen party supplies for my Elsa-obsessed daughter’s birthday party this year, I decided to save money by using decorations that were either A) things I already owned or B) bought from the dollar store. If you hit the dollar store between late September through late December, you are likely to find plenty of Christmas decorations that work equally well as inexpensive Frozen birthday party decorations You might already have items in your own home that you can use to turn your home into a frozen wonderland!
INEXPENSIVE FROZEN BIRTHDAY PARTY DECORATIONS
SNOWY ENTRY WAY DECORATIONS
When we have a birthday party at our house, I like to have some kind of decoration on the door that sets the theme for the party. Instead of creating something new, I used the Winter Yarn Pom Wreath I made last year and added the Sparkly Clay Ornaments I made for Dollar Store Crafts a few years back to it. If you are pulling from your own decorations, just about any Christmas door decoration that is snowy or glittery would work.
I wanted to (almost literally) hit our guests in the face with the snowy theme when they first walked in the door. I cut several dozen snowflakes out of printer paper and hung them in our entryway with transparent tape and monofilament. Simple and inexpensive, but effective. I just cut my snowflakes out quickly, grade school-style, but if you are patient and have steady hands you can find actual Frozen snowflake templates on Disney’s website.
BEST FROZEN BIRTHDAY PARTY DECOR FROM THE DOLLAR STORE
I put the rest of the party decorations in the main party room, where guests would get their food and drink. The inspiration for all the decorations came from the eternal winter of Elsa’s ice castle from Disney’s Frozen.
To decorate the food table, I used supplies from my craft stash and from our Christmas decorations. I made those Snowy Cone Trees last year from styrofoam cones, and they worked perfectly as a table centerpiece for the Frozen theme.
The foam snowflakes scattered around the table were found at Dollar Tree in a pack of 12.
The large plastic snowflakes suspended over the table were also from Dollar Tree. They are about 6 or 7 inches wide and come in a two-pack. The sharp-angled design reminded me of Elsa’s signature snowflake in the movie.
Also from the dollar store, these sparkly icicle ornaments hung from the drink station. I am excited to find a place for them in our Christmas decorations in a few months. These ornaments came in packs of 5 for a dollar.
Don’t forget to look for tableware, plates, and napkins at the dollar store as well. You can save so much by buying them there!
CREATING A MAGICAL FROZEN PARTY BACKDROP
The backdrop of the whole room was the twinkling window. I took down the grey curtains that usually hang in our grey, blue, and yellow dining room and replaced them with white sheers from storage. Behind the sheers, I snaked a long strand of white Christmas lights up and down, taping them to the window frame. These lights happened to be a strand with a control that lets you choose from 12 different “light patterns” like flashing, chasing, etc. I set them to the twinkle setting so they looked like sparkling snow.
I made a DIY garland of pink, purple, and white sparkly decorator mesh and tulle and draped that over the curtain rod.
Lastly, I hung dollar store snowflake ornaments from monofilament in several rows in front of the sheer curtains. These ornaments come in packs of 20 for a buck. Can’t beat that.
When all these layers were finished and the lights were turned on, the window looked like this:

It was ridiculously gaudy and tacky, and my four year old daughter adored it. So it was perfect. Whether you place this backdrop in front of a window or a wall, you could use it as a fun photo booth backdrop for your guests.
USING CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FOR A FROZEN PARTY THEME
I have to say that the lights did look pretty once the sun went down. Everything was twinkly and sort of magical.
Since I used so many things that I already owned to decorate for the party, I only ended up spending $6 on decorations! Some of that is due to my sizable craft stash, but I would venture that you have more Frozen party worthy decorations in your home than you would guess.
Although I didn’t splurge on actual Frozen party decor, I think we pulled the theme off pretty well. What do you think? Stay tuned this week to learn more about our Frozen party food (including a DIY ice cream birthday cake), the simple homemade Frozen party favors, and the tutorial for just how I layered the decorations for a Frozen party table.

Anything that calls for re-purposing stuff that you already had in your home is okay by me! Looks like it was a grand event! Thanks for sharing 🙂
