Every once in a while, I get the urge to just play around with supplies in my craft room. Sometimes it is because I want to improve my skill with a particular technique or tool. Sometimes it’s because I want to make something, but I am too cheap to buy new supplies. Other times my hands just get itchy to make something, so I just grab the first three craft supplies I see. This project was kind of a combination of all three of those scenarios. I played with my wood burning kit, alcohol inks, and pour over resin to create these beautiful ink dyed wooden tiles.
You can watch this short video to see how I created my tiles. I put out two new videos on my YouTube channel each week. Be sure to subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of the fun!
I first used my wood burning tool (the same one I used to make that leopard print frame) to create designs on each wooden square. If you don’t have a wood burning tool, go ahead and skip this step. The alcohol inks alone add awesome interest to the tiles. If you are looking to improve your skill with a wood burning tool, however, this is a perfect project. It is a pretty low-stakes way to try out new wood burning techniques.
When you are using a thirsty raw wood, the wood absorbs alcohol ink and spreads it out in cool and surprising ways. After dotting on the ink, a splash of rubbing alcohol helps to blend the colors together over the surface of the tile.
Finally, seal the wood and give it a glossy surface with a coat of pour over resin. You don’t have to use much product to get a slick, glossy finish. For more information about using pour over resin, check out this tutorial.
You can display these tiles as decor, use them in a DIY project, or add cork to the back to turn them into coasters. How would you use these beautiful ink dyed wood tiles?
