MAKING HALLOWEEN GHOST HAND PIES
It’s a good idea to let refrigerated pie crust sit at room temperature before you work with it. It makes the dough much easier to work with, so you are less likely to rip or crack it.
Roll one pie crust out on a clean work surface, and use a cookie cutter to cut the dough into shapes. I used a ghost cookie cutter to make these into Halloween hand pies, but you can use any cookie cutter that suits you. Just make sure you have an even number of shapes if you are using different cutters since you will need a top and bottom for each pie.
You can also cut the dough into rectangles to make hand pies similar to pop tarts.
Remember that you can gather up the dough scraps and roll them out again with a rolling pin to make more pie shapes!
Next, you will want to put a teaspoon of jelly on half of your pie crust shapes. You can use any jelly or pie filling you like for this recipe. I do suggest you use a smoother filling rather than one that might have fruit chunks in them since these pies are so small.
Red filling, like strawberry jelly or cherry pie filling, gives these Halloween hand pies a gory look when you bite into them! You can also use seasonal spreads like apple or pumpkin butter as well.
After you have dolloped the spread on the dough, spread it gently over the shape’s surface, avoiding the very edges of the shape. You don’t have to be too exact since the jam or spread will melt and move in the fryer.
Once you have spread the jelly or spread on half of the pie shapes, place a second matching pie shape on top of each of them. Then seal the edges closed with the tines of a fork. This will keep the jelly from leaking out of the dough in the air fryer.
Give your air fryer basket a light coating of cooking spray. Place the hand pies in the basket, and coat them with cooking spray as well. Place the basket in a preheated air fryer for anywhere between 5-8 minutes. Keep an eye on them and take them out when the edges look nice and golden brown.
Remove the mini pies from the air fryer and let them cool on a baking rack while you prep the decorations.
First, ice each pie with vanilla icing. You can make your own or take some help from the store. The store-bought icing pouches are a nice no-mess alternative.
Finish your Halloween hand pies with some spooky decorations. These ghost pies use mini chocolate chips as ghastly eyes and mouths. Let the family have fun decorating your pies however you like best.
