Raspberry Coconut Oil Body Scrub

August 1, 2012 by madincrafts 18 Comments

Raspberry Coconut Oil Body Scrub

Coconut oil is not just for cooking!  It also is great for your skin.  This SUPER easy body scrub combines skin-softening coconut oil with the exfoliation and relaxation of Epsom salts.  Add in a touch of raspberry scent and you have a scrub that’s great for pampering yourself or giving to others.

materials

To make Raspberry Coconut Oil Body Scrub, you will need:
coconut oil (like Tropical Traditions)
Epsom salts
raspberry extract
measuring cup
small jar with lid
spoon

melted coconut oil

First, figure out how much your jar holds.  If there is no marking on the jar itself, fill it with water and then pour the water into a measuring cup.  You want there to be twice as much Epsom salts in your scrub as there is coconut oil.  For example, for my 6 oz. jar, I used a half a cup (4 oz.) of Epsom salts and a quarter cup (2 oz.) of oil.  (The measuring cup contains the melted coconut oil.)

Mix the oil and salts together and add a splash of raspberry extract.  You could also substitute vanilla extract or a few drops of essential oil.  Stir the mixture together VERY well and immediately place it in the freezer.  The freezer will help the coconut oil to solidify, but if you wait too long the oil and salts will begin to separate.

If you are giving the scrub as a gift, you can pretty up the jar with stickers or ribbon!

My jar of coconut oil says that it does not need to be refrigerated, so you should be able to store this scrub in your bathroom without any issues.  If your home stays below 76 degrees, it should stay in its solid form.  If it begins to melt, stick it back in the freezer for a bit to harden it up.

Use it on rough heels, tired legs, or calloused hands for smooth, great-smelling skin!

Could you use almond extract instead of raspberry?

Absolutely! You can use whichever flavor extract you'd like. You can also use essential oils.

Hi. I was just wondering does this body wash make your skin oily like some coconut oil products? Or does it wash off well 🙂

It's not a body wash. It's an oil scrub, so it exfoliates and moisturizes, but it doesn't clean. It will leave a barrier of coconut oil on your skin to keep the moisture in. Hope that helps.

If the oil stays on your skin, do the epsom salts also stay on your skin? That sounds uncomfortable, a bit like having salt and sand stick to your skin after a day at the beach.

I also wondered if the epsom salts would work for sore muscles when used in this way.

When you rinse your skin after using the scrub, the exfoliated skin and salt rinse off and the oil stays behind. I believe that you have to soak in the Epsom salts for them to relieve aches. I have a tutorial for a DIY salt soak here: https://madincrafts.com/handmade-gift-soaking-salt…
