PERSONALIZED PHONE CHARGING CORD

July 17, 2020 by madincrafts 2 Comments

Our house is overrun with charging cords.  Every device has at least one cord, and it seems like they are all different sizes and types.  I hate having to try to plug in six different cords to find the right one.  I found a fun way to make a personalized phone charging cord that is also practical and pretty.  By wrapping the cords with embroidery floss, I can tell which cord is which at a glance.  As a bonus, the floss makes the cords a bit sturdier, which can keep them from bending and breaking.

HOW TO WRAP A CHARGING CABLE WITH EMBROIDERY FLOSS

You can use this technique on any length cord, just make sure you cut the floss to be roughly four times longer than the cord.  The most difficult part of this project is keeping the length of floss from getting tangled.

step by step photos of how to wrap a charging cord with embroidery floss

  1. Start by tying the embroidery floss to the base of the charging cord with a double knot.  Trim off the excess floss.

  2. Bring the floss to the right side of the cord.

  3. Make a loop to the left of the cord and cross the floss over the front of the cord, towards your right.

  4. Bring the floss behind the cord, and through the loop on the left.

  5. Pull the knot tight.

  6. Make a loop to the right of the cord and cross the floss over the front of the cord, towards your left.

  7. Bring the floss behind the cord, and through the loop on the right.

  8. Pull the knot tight.

  9. Repeat steps 2-8 for the entire length of your cord. Tie the floss off with a double knot.

When you are finished, you will have a colorful charging cord that is easy to spot in your junk drawer (because you know that’s where you keep them).   I used several strands of embroidery floss in different colors on my two cords, but you can choose to use all one color if you would like.  I like to choose colors that match the device they belong with, to sort of color code them.
