Handmade Gift: Simple Coconut Oil Lip Gloss

Handmade Gift: Simple Coconut Oil Lip Gloss
Only 7 more shopping weekends until Christmas!  Are you ready?  Of course you’re not.  Yesterday was Halloween, for heaven’s sake. Even still, the holidays will sneak up on us like they always do, so it’s not crazy to start thinking about homemade gifts already.
Today I am sharing the simple process for making your own coconut oil lip gloss, which makes a pretty and useful gift for any woman on your list.  You may even already have many of the necessary ingredients in your home already.

main-lip-gloss-ingredients_thumb1

When your lips get cracked and chapped in the winter, the skin cells aren’t able to act as a protective barrier against the elements as well as they usually do.  Using an oil-based lip gloss seals in your body’s natural moisture and protects your lips from wind and cold.

To make Coconut Oil Lip Gloss, you will need:
virgin coconut oil
vaseline
lipstick
raspberry extract (or whatever flavor you’d like)
lip gloss pots
microwavable bowl
plastic spoon

Melt equal parts coconut oil and vaseline in a microwaveable bowl until completely melted and combined.  Mine took about 90 seconds total, stopping every 30 seconds to stir.

Scoop out the lipstick and add it to your oil mixture.  Choose a brighter color lipstick than you might normally wear; the color will be diluted in the gloss.  Add a touch of raspberry extract.  I added about a tsp to my 2/3 cup of oil mixture, and I could have added even a bit more to balance out the coconut smell.  Stir until the lipstick is completely melted and combined with the gloss.

Line your gloss pots up on a plate or tray because, unless you have an amazingly steady hand, there will probably be some spill over.
My lip gloss pots are actually tiny craft supply organizers from Dollar Tree.  You can also use emptied out used lip gloss containers, mint tins, or clean make-up jars.

While the mixture is still warm, carefully pour it into the gloss pots.  I overfilled these, make sure to leave room to place the lids back on the pots.
Put the lids back on, and use a wet paper towel to wipe any excess gloss off the outside of the pots.  Put the filled pots in the freezer for 15 minutes to set the gloss.

You can leave the pots plain, or decorate them.  I thought about using washi tape on the pots, but I was afraid it would wear off too easily.  Instead I cut 1 1/8 inch circles from decorative duck tape and adhered them to the lids of the gloss.

Wasn’t that easy?  This would be a very fun project to tackle with any tweens or teenagers you have in the house.

Christmas may seem a ways off now, but be sure to pin this project for those last minute gifts that will be stressing you out come December!

Coconut's melting point is 76 degrees, so it needs to be stored below that temp in order for it to remain in solid state. Refrigeration or keeping it in a cooler place in your home will help.

What would you recommend for someone to use as an alternative to the Vaseline? I want to avoid petroleum products.

I can't personally recommend these ingredients because I have never used them, but I have seen other tutorials which use aloe vera or beeswax.

Hey there!! Love this idea! However, I don’t have ANY lipsticks, so I was wondering, do you NEED to put in the lipstick, or is it just for the colour?

    Thanks! x

Yes, the lipstick is just for color! Hope that helps!
