WHAT IS GROUNDHOG DAY?
Groundhog Day is a holiday observed in the United States and Canada on February 2nd each year. On this day folklore says that if a groundhog comes out of his burrow and sees his shadow, he will retreat back into his burrow and we will have six more weeks of wintery weather. If the groundhog does NOT see his shadow, Spring is coming soon!
The most famous celebration of Groundhog Day is in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Each year the President of the “Inner Circle,” wearing a tuxedo and a top hat, helps Punxsutawney Phil, a local groundhog, onto a special tree stump. Phil then tells the Inner Circle President whether or not he has seen his shadow. Based on this communication, the President announces whether we will have six more weeks of Winter.
HOW TO USE THE PRINTABLE GROUNDHOG PUPPET
Save the PDF to your computer and then print off as many copies as your children will need.
Practice scissor skills by carefully cutting out Punxsutawney Phil from the printable. This can be done ahead of time by a grownup if you are using the printable with younger kids.
After the puppet is cut out, use school glue to attach him to a popsicle stick or dowel. Then you can have fun decorating Phil with yarn, glitter glue, sequins, or pictures cut from magazines.
Let your puppet dry and then recreate your own Groundhog Day at home. Take your puppet outside and see if Phil casts a shadow on the ground. Will there be six more weeks of Winter or is Spring coming soon?
