HOW TO TURN A CHRISTMAS TREE INTO A FRONT DOOR SWAG
The finished swag is roughly three feet long, so it is nice and big for front doors. I chose to decorate mine with a more traditional style, but you can customize yours in so many different ways. This is a great opportunity to use your imagination and creativity!
Dollar Store Christmas Swag Tutorial
- The tree will have a plastic block at the base of it where you would attach the feet of the tree stand. Start by removing that plastic piece.
- I didn’t like how that left an exposed metal rod at the end of the tree. I ended up bending that part back and forth until it broke off. You could choose to paint it or cover it with decorations if it bothers you too.
- Lay the tree flat on a work surface and fluff the branches of the tree to make it look more natural.
- Stick floral picks into the branches of the tree. Secure floral wire, hot glue, or zip ties.
- Create a bow with ribbon and attach it to the top of the swag with a zip tie.
- Add in any other decorations to complete your swag.
- Bend one of the branches on the back of the swag to form a loop. Hang this from a wreath hanger or hook on your door.
CUSTOMIZING THE CHRISTMAS SWAG
I used ribbon and berry picks from the dollar store to decorate my swag, but you can use things you already have on hand to make the DIY even more economical.
Customize the Swag Base
Dollar Tree sells these 4-foot trees in both green and white variations, and you could use either variety as the base for your swag. Either version is a great price at just five bucks!
Change Up the Ribbon
I used flocked, unwired ribbon from Dollar Tree so that the ribbon would drape nicely. Wired ribbon would give you a more full-looking bow. You could also save time by buying a premade bow from the dollar store.
Decorating the Swag
I used floral picks from Dollar Tree and a pair of bronze bells I found at Aldi. You can find similar bells online as well. Pinecones and other greenery would give you a woodsy and natural look. Colorful ornaments and ribbons would completely change the vibe. Customize it to suit your home and taste!
