I was an early reader, partly because my parents needed a way to keep me occupied on our annual car trips to Wisconsin to visit relatives. When I was five, they put me in the back seat of our compact car and gave me a copy of a book. That book happened to be Charlotte’s Web. Because the book is such an amazing story, and because it was one of the earliest books I read myself, the story has stuck with me over the years. The character of Charlotte the spider affected the way I feel about spiders, and might be why I am not as afraid of them as some other people are. She was kind, brave, and selfless. Whether she was weaving mysterious messages about Wilbur into her web or expending the last of her energy to weave an egg sac for her children, she was the kind of friend we all wish we could have around.
That’s why, when I found several spider egg sacs on the bottom of the rolling cart I was refinishing for our sunroom makeover, I carefully wheeled the cart outside so I could release Charlotte’s babies into the environment that would be the most beneficial for them. I bent down, wished the spider babies well, and gently blew on the egg sacs to release the spiders so they could gently float away on their gossamer threads.
And, holy porkchops, nearly-microscopic spider babies went EVERYWHERE. I completely panicked and ran back into the sunroom, frantically shaking my hair and clothes because I was sure they were full of infant spiders. I probably didn’t actually have spiders on me, but it certainly felt like it I did. It felt like I did for two days.
In the book, only three of Charlotte’s babies stick around Zuckerman’s barn. Yeah, a whole lot more of these spiders decided to stick around The Mad House. Not radiant at all, little spider dudes.
Thankfully, I was able to use my Hot Shot® Insecticide spray to get rid of the spiders that actually worked their way back into the house. It is fine to use around kids and the dog, so I can clearly define the boundaries of what is our home and what is fair game for the spiders. The sunroom is supposed to be my place to hide, not Charlotte’s. If she wants to weave herself anymore egg sacs for her babies, she best do it outside.
