WHAT IS BLUE CURAÇAO?
Blue curaçao is a citrusy liqueur that is a favorite with mixologists since it adds a fun, vibrant blue color to mixed drinks. The drink is made by infusing the alcohol with the rinds of a bitter orange found in the tropics. The blue color is not naturally produced; it comes from blue food coloring that is added to the liqueur. Blue curaçao has a moderate ABV and is often found in cocktails alongside stronger alcohols.
MAKING A BLUE MARGARITA
First, you will need a blender that can handle ice cubes. Starting with smaller ice cubes or crushed ice will give your blender more of a fighting chance at creating a smooth blended margarita.
Pour the two alcohols into the blender.
Add in the cream of coconut. This may be fairly thick, but it will blend into the margarita just fine. Blend all these ingredients until smooth.
Run a slice of lime around the rim of a margarita glass to wet it. Invert the glass onto a shallow dish filled with margarita salt in order to add a line of salt to the rim of the glass.
Pour the blended margarita into the upright glass. Garnish with a slice of lime and a cocktail umbrella.

RECIPE ADDITIONS AND SUBSTITUTIONS
Ingredient Substitutions
You can swap out the blue curaçao for blue curaçao syrup. This will lessen the amount of alcohol in the margarita, but it will allow you to add more of the syrup to amp up the citrus flavor and the blue color.
If you don’t have cream tequila on hand (or don’t love the flavor of 1921), you can swap it out for standard tequila and a splash of heavy cream.
