FROZEN MARGARITAS VS. MARGARITAS ON THE ROCKS
People who love margaritas almost always have a preference between frozen margs and margaritas served over ice. I’m here to tell you that they are both wonderful in their own ways. Here are a few pros for the frozen variety.
- Frozen margaritas are instantly icy cold and refreshing. A frosty margarita is an amazing way to cool off on a hot summer day.
- Frozen cocktails have a really delicious texture. Texture isn’t something you typically consider in a cocktail but the slushy feel of a frozen drink is a great break from the ordinary.
- Frozen margaritas take the edge off of the tequila taste. Tequila is a strong taste, and the crushed ice dilutes it enough to make it more palatable to more people. This also means you don’t have to break out your best tequila when making a blended margarita.
- Frozen drinks are the most fun to garnish! The more solid surface of a blended drink opens up a whole world of floating garnishes, from fruit to flowers and more!
But margaritas over ice are amazing too! Here are some reasons to make margaritas on the rocks:
- Standard margaritas are easier to make and don’t require a heavy-duty blender to pulverize the ice.
- Margaritas served over ice cubes don’t become diluted by quickly melting ice which results in a punchier, more flavorful cocktail.
- Serving a margarita over ice is the way the original drink was designed. If being a cocktail purist is important to you, order a classic margarita on the rocks.
WHY MAKE MARGARITAS FROM SCRATCH?
Like most recipes, making these margaritas from scratch gives you a fresher taste as well as more control over the final flavor of the drink. There are some great margarita mixes on the market, but they tend to be sweeter than I like. When you make the lime margaritas yourself, you can make them as tart or as sweet as you would like by adjusting the amount of simple syrup you add.
HOW TO MAKE FROZEN LIME MARGARITAS
Making a frozen margarita at home isn’t difficult, but it does require you to have a high-powered blender and access to a good amount of ice.
Place all of the drink ingredients into the blender and pulverize the ice until it reaches an icy, slushy consistency.
If you are making margaritas for a crowd, it’s a good idea to ask your guests if they prefer a salted rim or not. Even if they opt to drink the margarita over the salted rim, I recommend including a straw in the drink. This will allow the drinker to stir the drink as the ice melts, keeping the drink at a homogenous consistency.
Now it’s time to go nuts with the garnish. You can add limes to the rim of the glass, pop in a skewer of fresh fruit, float a tropical flower on the surface of the drink, or insert a mini umbrella for peak tropical vibes!
CLASSIC FROZEN MARGARITA
This recipe is for a classic citrus margarita. The lime juice pairs with the orange flavor of the triple sec to give you a refreshing tropical drink.
If you want to mix up a more unique frozen marg, here are a few variations to try:
- Swap out the fresh lime juice for another fresh-made juice.
- Replace a cup of ice with a cup of frozen berries.
- Swap out the simple syrup for 1/2 tablespoon of agave nectar for a naturally occurring sweetener.
- Replace the tequila with Mezcal. You may want to reduce the amount of alcohol to 3/4 of an ounce as Mezcal is stronger than tequila.
- Leave out the triple sec and replace it with an orange liqueur like Cointreau.
- Rim the margarita glass with a spice blend like Tajin instead of margarita salt.
