Of all the bath bombs on Instagram, I’ve seen the most people freaking out over the black variety. Something about how they make the bath water turn inky black is fascinating and mysterious. As I was doing some test runs on my bath bomb recipes, I decided to try to make one of my own. And, for some yin yang action, I made a white bath bomb as well. Both of these black & whitebath bombs use the same denser recipe as the Pokeball version I shared yesterday. Your skin will feel so smooth after a soak with one of these in the tub. Do be careful, though, because the oil may make your tub more slippery than you are used to.
The white bath bomb is free of any food coloring at all, which is great if you have any skin sensitivities and are worried about how the coloring might affect your skin. The bomb will still have all the soothing effects of the salts and oils, it just won’t change your bath water at all.
I could have purchased black food coloring in the cake decorating aisle of the store, but I wanted to try to replicate the black color with standard food colors. If you look closely in this picture, you will see little flecks of blue and green since it is difficult to get even color distribution with gel food coloring. If you have the old liquid coloring, this would work even better.
To get the almost black color, I used a little color wheel magic. I added a good amount of blue food coloring followed by half as much red and half as much yellow (aka orange). Then I added a good amount of green and an equal amount of red. By adding equal amounts of complimentary colors, I was able to achieve a nice dark color.
The black bath bomb isn’t as dramatic in the bath water as the store bought versions. I would assume they also use activated charcoal, which might be worth some experimentation down the line. I hope you enjoyed this week of bath bomb projects!
