HOW TO MAKE A NATURAL AIR FRESHENER IN A JAR
Making a natural air freshener couldn’t be simpler. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into a mason jar and add 20-40 drops of essential oil. You can scale this recipe up to make more than one jar at a time. You want to add 10 drops of oil per 2 tablespoons.
Give the mixture a stir to distribute the oil through the baking soda. Place the fabric over the top of the jar and screw the lid ring over it to lock it in place.
What Essential Oils Should You Use?
I used eucalyptus, but peppermint, lemon, and lavender essential oil is also popular fragrances. You can do a little research on aromatherapy to decide what scents will work for you. You can rest easy knowing the fragrance in your air freshener comes from nature and not from toxic chemicals.

How Long Will the Air Freshener Last
The air freshener will last 2-3 weeks. Then empty the old baking soda into the trash, and add a new batch into the jar.
WHERE TO USE BAKING SODA AIR FRESHENERS
I originally created this air freshener to give as a teacher appreciation gift. Here’s a little insider teaching information that you probably didn’t know. Classrooms stink. Seriously. No matter how clean and fresh your precious child is when you drop him off at school, by the end of the day he will have a definite funk. Whether it’s from warm weather, running around at recess, or those lovely emerging hormones, classrooms become stale and stanky as the day goes on. As a teacher, it is hard to combat the unavoidable smell. Candles are a fire hazard, and aerosol sprays are only a temporary fix. These jar fresheners are a great solution for classrooms.
You can also use one of these room fresheners in these locations:
- bathrooms
- bedrooms
- basements
- campers/RVs
- near pet beds
OTHER WAYS TO USE BAKING SODA TO FRESHEN A ROOM
These jar air fresheners are not the only way to make air fresheners without harmful chemicals.
Baking Soda Air Freshener Discs
You can mold and bake air freshener discs using the same process I used to make my shower melts. Instead of melting them in the shower, simply tuck them into closets or drawers to keep them smelling fresh.
Baking Soda Air Freshener Discs
You can create a natural room spray with water, baking soda, and essential oil. In a spray bottle, combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 5 drops of essential oil. Shake well to mix. Then add enough water (or distilled water) to fill the spray bottle. You can use this like a commercial air freshener to eliminate any yucky house smell you might be dealing with.
