Okay, so that jerk of a groundhog didn’t exactly say that spring is right around the corner. In fact in Wisconsin, the groundhog made his prediction loud and clear: This winter is going to hurt, so get used to it now. If your home is as locked in with snow as mine is, you need some bright color inside to balance the monochromatic view outside.
Last month, I used my Plutonium Paint to make some color blocked colored blocks which have already added color to my décor. This time around I used one of my favorite Plutonium colors and some geometric scrapbook paper to make a bright and cheerful tray.
Click the affiliate links above to purchase the materials I used in this tutorial. You can use an old tray you have on hand or scout for one at thrift stores. You can usually find trays for just a few bucks, and since you are giving it a makeover it doesn’t matter how ugly it is!
First, give the whole tray a coat of Plutonium paint. You probably won’t need more than one coat and some touch-ups since Plutonium covers so well. I used Aloha which is one my favorite of Plutonium’s 40 colors. It is a cheerful aqua color that looks great with lots of other spring colors.
While the paint is drying, measure the interior of the tray and cut the paper to size. You won’t have to wait long for Plutonium to be dry, so you might be ready to move on the next step immediately.
Brush a layer of outdoor Mod Podge onto the interior of the tray and position the paper in place. Smooth the paper onto the Mod Podged tray, starting from the center and smoothing out to the edges. Hopefully this will push any air trapped under the paper out as you go.
After the paper is smooth, apply another layer of outdoor Mod Podge over the paper to seal it in place. You can use any Mod Podge formula you like, but I chose the outdoor formula so it stands up to moisture from drinks.
The tray adds a shot of color onto a coffee table or a desk, which is where I will likely use it. I think the colors would look fantastic in my craft room.
Looking at those bright, Spring colors I can almost pretend the wind chill outside isn’t several degrees below zero. Almost.
