Now that my kids done with school for the year, we are enjoying the nice weather and spending more time outside. When we come back indoors though, I encourage them to get their noses in a book rather than pressed up against a TV. Disney Story Central is a happy medium that allows my kids the digital animation of video games and their favorite movies, while keeping them reading.
Disney Story Central is the largest collection of Disney digital stories, featuring a wide array of Disney stories and characters that kids and families know and love. The cross-platform experience is available via iPhone and iPad app, tablet-optimized website and Video on Demand (AT&T U-Verse).
Disney Story Central is designed to encourage kids to develop a lifetime love of reading. The program allows kids to choose stories based on characters that they love.
A “Browse By Character” carousel lets families easily find books starring their favorite character. spanning all Disney franchises, including Disney Princess, Disney Classics, Frozen, Doc McStuffins, Cars, and more. Of course, my four year old daughter was all about choosing stories featuring Elsa, Anna, and Olaf!
Each book allows her to choose to be read to or to read by herself. The Read to Me option has a friendly clear voice that reads the story aloud as she turns the virtual pages.
My daughter loves listening to the stories, and I love that the program highlights each word in the story as it is being read. This is teaching her basic principles of reading while she listens.
She also enjoys seeing what awards she earns by reading. Stars, Ranks, and Trophies reward her for reading and encourages her to keep it up. Although my daughter isn’t reading yet, my son has been reading for a few years. Disney Story Central has books for him too by offering a variety of content for pre-readers, speed readers, and everyone in-between.
I am loving that any books we choose on the app are available to use online via computer or tablet, and vice versa. That means their new stories are accessible at home or on the go. I feel much better about them reading books while they wait for their food at a restaurant than just playing some mindless phone game.
Disney offers two ways to enjoy books on Disney Story Central. The Disney Book Token system helps parents empower their kids to pick out the books they WANT to read, allowing them to build their own collection of stories, featuring the characters they love. They have also released a subscription service which gives kids unlimited access to Disney Story Central’s expansive library of books for $7.99 a month. Disney is constantly adding new books to the library, so this is a service I am definitely considering!
