When I was putting together my daughter’s nursery, I knew wanted the room to be girly, but not over-the-top girly. Since the move into the new house was so close to my due date, and since funds are always limited, I kept the decorations simple and used a lot of things we already had.
My ideas for the nursery started with a Barbara Bordnick print called Papaver that I bought 4 years ago for my husband and my first apartment.
I love the bold colors and the graphic way the image is cropped. It’s feminine without the gag-factor that florals can sometimes have.
To make the framed print a focal point, I hung it over the changing table. That way it is the first thing you see when you walk into the room.
PS A wipes warmer may seem like an unnecessary luxury to you, but your baby’s heiney will thank you for having one. Not, literally, though. That would be weird.
My cousin’s wife took, framed, and matted these photos as a wedding gift for my husband and me since she knows that tulips are my favorite flower. The colors are perfect for the room, and, again, the flowers are feminine without being icky.
The crib got a MAJOR dose of the pink treatment.Heh. Turns out Baby Girl’s room was ahead of the fashion curve, as Pantone has declared Honeysuckle the Color of the Year for 2011.
I whipped up some easy tissue pom pom flowers and suspended them above the crib instead of a mobile. The baby loves staring up at them. The poms were super easy to make; they are basically a bigger version of these Mexican Paper Flowers.
The pink flower afghan was crocheted by my mother-in-law who can whip one of these bad boys up in her sleep, I think!
My mom made the crib skirt since I am still sewing machine challenged. She did an awesome job, and I love the mod, lattice-like print. I also think it’s cool to have something made by each grandmother as part of the baby’s crib.
The hanging lamp hung in my nursery when I was a baby. It was brown wicker, but I hit it with a few coats of watermelon spray paint (colored, not flavored). Eventually, I plan to cover the hanging chain in green fabric, so it looks more like a flower hanging from a vine.
I have had that throw pillow for 15 years, and it has never matched anything I’ve owned. Now it’s finally found the home it was always meant for!
And another sentimental touch to the room: The flowers in the vase are the bouquet I made for my wedding.
Obviously, I still need to make or find some kind of window treatment for the corner windows. Do you guys have any cute ideas?
