We have a basset hound named Mitchell Barbara Manatee, and there is no other dog like him. My husband and I got him right after we married, eight years ago. He was our baby before we had babies, and he was my kids’ first best friend. His droopy ears are as soft as velvet and smell like garbage. We love him.
If you make eye contact with him, it means you love him and want to pet him.
If you say his name, it means you love him and want to pet him.
He is sure he is the only line of defense between us and the evil mail carrier.
If you throw him a bit of your food, he flinches and lets the food hit him in the face.
If the smoke detector beeps even once, he hides under furniture.
He enjoys licking over-sprayed non-stick cooking spray off the kitchen floor. Butter-flavored is his favorite.
If the lap is willing, he is a lap dog. All 65+ pounds of him.
He will only howl if we howl along with him.
He barks at curtains and balloons.
I have never met a dog who is better with kids. Ever.
Mitchie is one of a kind. And so are Aunt Peaches’ cat Lola, Amy from Mod Podge Rocks’ pug Roxie, Buddy the English Shepherd owned by Brittany of Pretty Handy Girl, and Rhonda aka Mrs. Greene’s cat named Abracadabra. And so is your pet.
Thanks to Colleen from Just Paint It! we each have a one-of-a-kind portrait of our one-of-a-kind pets. Colleen has begun selling custom pet painting through her Etsy shop, so you can commission your own pet portrait. As you can see, her work is beyond fabulous, and I am not just saying that because she is a good friend of mine. I have always known that Colleen was talented, but seeing her work in person took my admiration to another level. She has a gift.
Even if you aren’t in the market for a custom pet portrait, you can still own some of Colleen’s work. She is selling prints and other products with her designs on them in her zazzle store. Colleen has been sharing the behind the scenes of her work on the paintings on her blog, Just Paint It! too, along with other fantastic DIYs and home decor projects.

Beautiful post, Jessica. Oh, how I wish I could actually meet the doggies (and kitties) I paint. That was the best part of painting wall murals. I’d be in the home for a week or more and the pets would love having company – and extra attention.
Thank you so much. I’m so happy you’re enjoying the painting. xoxo
