Mint green and gold is a hot color combination this spring. I like the contrast of the bold metallic with a demure pastel. What I don’t love is having to pay big bucks to incorporate the trend into my home’s décor. With a little ingenuity you can use dollar store materials to bring in the season’s trends. That way if the fad passes, you can ditch the piece without having lost a huge investment of time or money.
This piece’s impact comes from the geometric gold studs which started out as something quite different: a dollar store headband!
To make Studded Mint Green and Gold Art, you will need:
picture frame*
studded headband*
craft glue*
scissors*
white paper*
paintbrushes*
*items you can find at Dollar Tree
Give the picture frame a good coat of mint green paint. I really like Martha Stewart’s Mint. It’s not too yellow and not too pastel.
Lay down a bead of craft paint along one interior edge of the frame. Lay the headband down and press into the glue. Let the glue dry. Flip the frame over and glue down the headband on the back of the frame. Cut off off any excess elastic.
If your frame is large enough, you might be able to stretch the headband over the frame, and skip the glue totally. Then you can take the headband off when you aren’t digging the studded look anymore.
Paint a very simple shape, like a heart, with gold paint on white paper. Cut the paper down to the size of the frame. After the paint has dried, re-assemble the frame.
For $2 you can add a touch of the season’s trends to your home. It’s a pretty luxe look for such a cheap and easy project!
Gold and mint is a hot color combination for weddings this year, and this would be a cheap way to create table markers for the reception too!
I am going to be trying my hand out at some other blingy projects in the near future. It’s stretching my crafting skillz a bit, but that is always a good thing. What’s the riskiest trend you have worked into your home décor?
