Every year I go through the same routine with the lights for our Christmas tree.  Plug them in to see if they work.  Discard the duds.  Unravel the tangles on the good strands.  Carefully weave the lights in and out of the branches, up and down and all around.  Step back, turn off all the the other lights in the living room, and squint at the tree to identify any bare spots.  Adjust the lights to deal with bare spots.  Run out to the store to buy more lights and pray that they are the same brand, size, and colors.  Enjoy the tree for a month, quietly dreading the day I have to peel all those lights off the tree to pack them away.  I do it every year, but it’s far from my favorite Christmas tradition.

I have considered going the pre-lit tree route, but up to this point it has seemed like too much of a commitment.  Traditionally, we have always used multi-colored lights.  Our tree is a mishmash of sentimental ornaments and decorations made by the kids, so colored lights just seem to work.

I really love how the tree I decorated for my son’s school turned out though, and I may want to opt for a more designer looking tree when the kids are bit older.  Wouldn’t white lights make more sense for that kind of tree?
