I knew that with both his birthday and Christmas coming up, my little guy is probably going to have some cash gifts coming in. I figured it was a good idea to have a place to put that money so it didn’t accidentally get spent on dog food or cleaning supplies or something.
I found some cute piggy banks at the dollar store, but they were a little more Old MacDonald than Marvin the Martian and that just wouldn’t do for his space room. And thus begat the Robo-Pig.
To make Robo-Pig, you will need:
a dollar store piggy bank
dollar store craft paints
dollar store sealant
paintbrushes
Obviously, you can adapt this project to fit whatever decorations your child has in his or her room. If your kid is a little bit older, you can even let him paint the piggie himself!
Robo-Pig started out this bright yellow color. If I would have had my thinking cap on, I would have picked one of the other colors of pigs the dollar store carried, since yellow is the absolute hardest color to paint over. But my thinking cap was at the cleaners (I think I dropped it off a few years ago), so it didn’t even cross my mind when I bought it.
I forgot I had a big container of white craft paint in the basement (Note to self: Find the dry cleaner’s ticket so I can pick up that hat.), so I mixed up a grayish color using black and light blue. I had to put on a few coats to cover the yellow.
He really is more gray in real life than he looks in this picture.
After he dried, I added the details.
Don’t try to steal any of my son’s birthday money. Robo-Pig shoots laser beams out of his piggy nostrils.
After the detail work dried, he got 2 coats of sealant for gloss and to protect the paint job.
Pretty cute, eh? I should probably make one for myself so I could actually save up some money for retirement.
And by retirement, of course I mean “really cool craft projects.”
