Not familiar with Silhouette’s machines? You should be. I have wanted one for years, and was thrilled to be given the chance to review one for you. I put the Silhouette Cameo through its paces, and I am even more enthusiastic about it that I was before I was able to try one. I don’t usually review most expensive craft tools because I know many people don’t have the room in their budget for them. But, if you are able to take advantage of Silhouette’s Black Friday Sale, I do recommend the Cameo for frequent crafters. It is a fun and useful tool to have access to!
Silhouette Cameo and Portrait are electronic cutting machines that cut paper, fabric, and more in sort of the same way a printer prints documents or photos. You create a file on your computer using the Silhouette software, send it to the machine, and the machine cuts it out for you perfectly and precisely.
The software comes pre-loaded with some cut-able designs and you can purchase more designs in the Silhouette store. If you have purchased music from iTunes, you can figure out the Silhouette store. I love being able to search for and find just what I am looking for from the store, without having to purchase a whole pack of designs I don’t need.
My favorite part of the Silhouette, however, is the ability to create your OWN cut files from scratch. Using Silhouette software, you can work up personalized designs for any project and the machine will cut them out beautifully. My mind is spinning with all the project possibilities. And if I run out of ideas, I will just pop over to Silhouette’s pinterest account for dozens more great ideas! If you aren’t convinced that you will actually have use for a Silhouette, just browse through those amazing ideas.
I used my Silhouette software to make a simple design for a family member’s 6th birthday party. The party was a dinosaur theme, so I put together a design by tracing a jpg of a T-Rex (using this tutorial from Dream a Little Bigger). I added in his name with the text tool and put the whole design in a simple frame.
I cut the design out of construction paper, and glued it to a piece of brown cardstock. I then used adhesive dots to stick that to a cardstock blank card.
If I had tried to make that card design on my own, it not only would have taken me forever, but it would have looked nothing like a dinosaur! I was really excited about the end result because this was my VERY FIRST Silhouette project. I am excited for all the other ideas that will be coming down the pipe!
